Facebook Timeline Fan Page for Businesses: What’s Changed?

The “new” Facebook with Timeline look isn’t that new anymore, but there are probably some tricks that you haven’t discovered yet, although the management part hasn’t changed all that much. You still need to have engaged fans to increase visibility of your page ad your brand, only now the interactions on Facebook are highly personalized and some of them presented in a very different way, leaving you on an entirely new playground. Let’s review some of the key points about using the new features for making the most out of your new fan pages. Here are other tips if you want to know how to create a new facebook page for business. #1 Cover image

At the top of your page, with generously large dimensions of 851×315 pixels, this is what you use to replace now not existing default landing tab, so make the most of it. You can change it as many times as you like, and each time you do, it goes into the news feed of your fans! Launched another great product? Celebrating your company’s 5th birthday? Make a big image out of it and change your cover photo to let your fans know about it quickly.

Keep in mind though that Facebook doesn’t allow contact info, promotions, price or purchase information, calls to action and  similar things on your cover image; but even so, you can still be very, very creative!

#2 Profile picture

Now, here you can use the magical words (Like us, for example). It’s very small, 150×150 pixels, and although it comes with no restrictions (like that for the cover photo), many people would rather put a company logo, or some other brand related image. Either way it’s fine.

#3 New messaging system

Yes, you can now have a private conversation via Inbox. Still, a fan has to be the first to send a message, but still! Of course, you may not be as happy with this feature if you have tons of fans and they all have problems they want to share privately, but if you manage to respond to them, this might earn you some serious points! Also, be a good sport and don’t overuse the option to promote your business (read: spam) – you will end up with no fans to send messages to.

#4 Highlight posts

Any important post can now be “starred”, i.e. spread across both columns, which will distinguish it from other posts on your page. You just need to click a star icon when you hover over a post you want to highlight.

Another way to bring attention to a post is to pin it at the top of your page, so it doesn’t get buried under the newer posts (the pencil icon). You can keep it there up to 7 days, but it probably shouldn’t stay at the top for longer than 2 or 3 days (you probably have fans who visit your page more often, and you should keep it fresh because of them), and you can only pin one item at a time.

 #5 Custom Tab Images

The navigation is right below the cover image. Facebook allows 12 tabs total, with the maximum of four tabs displayed at 111×74 pixels which you can fully customize, including custom images (except for the first one, this is always “Photos” tab), and you can use them to channel your visitors to the important places: a product, a call to action, an app…

#6 Milestones

You can now take the important events and dates and create milestones on your fan page, which is another great way to create more interesting looks. Many fans like to see your company’s history presented in a visually organized way, and the best thing about this is that you can post milestones from the past, and these posts also go to your fans’ news feed.

So, have you tried to play with any of the new features? If you have, please let us know how you feel about the new looks and feels of Facebook!
